Jewelry Care
Certain basic precautions apply to help to keep the sparkle in your jewelry:
- Remove your bling when pursuing outdoor sports and activities, including gardening and swimming, and when you are doing heavy housework.
- Avoid excessive impact against hard surfaces, and contact with perfumes, cosmetics and household chemicals.
- Never remove jewelry by pulling directly on any of the stones.
As with all jewelry, regularly cleaning is important as soaps, lotions and other everyday items dirt build up can reduce the brilliance of the stone.
- To clean your Desert Diamonds jewelry, use a mild solution of 6 parts water to one part ammonia and apply with a very soft non-metallic bristled brush.
- Jewelry set with stones can be maintained with a non-abrasive jewelry cleaner. Ultra sonic cleaning is not safe for many gemstones so we advise against this method.
Professional cleaning and servicing (which includes checking the setting and prongs) is highly recommended at least once a year.
All 18k white gold jewelry is rhodium plated to improve its appearance. As the rhodium plating wears off over time, it is a good idea to have your white gold jewelry re-plated when there are signs of wear.
Caring for your silver jewelry
Tarnishing of silver is a normal process that is caused by oxidization and moisture from air as well as sunlight.
To reduce tarnish and keep your pieces tarnish free for months at a time, it is recommended that you keep sterling silver jewelry in an air-tight protective bag made of tarnish proof cloth or you can use a plastic zip lock bag. Storing jewelry this way also prevents it from rubbing against other surfaces which may cause scratching making it more difficult to clean.
Sterling silver, stored properly, can be worn often and with minimal cleaning required, making it very easy to care for.
- When thoroughly cleaning sterling silver jewelry you need to take greater care if the piece contains gemstones.
- A jewelry cloth is the most effective and safest way of cleaning tarnished jewelry. Rub with a lengthwise motion, avoid clean in a circular motion because this may cause scratches.
- To remove the tarnish from hard to reach areas, use a non-abrasive brand name liquid cleaner and you may use a very soft brush like a child's tooth brush to get into the crevices.
- Using toothpaste or baking soda is not recommended as these may be too abrasive.
- Sterling Silver jewelry that has been rhodium plated requires less maintenance. The jewelry will not tarnish when the rhodium coating is intact. Do not use abrasive cleaners as this will wear away the protective coating faster. Rhodium plating wears away over time depending on the amount of wear and tear. To prevent jewelry from tarnishing, items should be re-plated with rhodium every 12-18 months depending on the amount of wear and tear the item has endured.
